Today there are many different types of cement. The article referenced here is mainly concerned with the evolution of Portland cement from its predecessors.

This paper documents the development of cement and concrete from the first recorded uses of cementitious compounds, in about 12 000 BC, leading to the production and improvement of Portland cement in the 19th and the early 20th Century.
