Mechanically Activated Clay

Mechanically Activated Clay

The pioneering work done by Karen Scrivener at EPFL on LC3 has generated huge interest in using calcined clay as and SCM to reduce the per ton carbon emission of cement. Of course, calcination is a thermal process and uses plenty of energy, so calcined clay can have a significant carbon footprint of its own, albeit much less than clinker. If clay could be activated mechanically rather than with heat, the energy required and carbon emitted would be much less.

The Product, Materials and Concrete Professional Committee has organised a Member Forum on November 19 at 12:15 - 1:45pm UK time to look at the topic of Mechanically Activated Clays. We are delighted to have 2 great speakers from ThyssenKrupp and Carbon Upcycling.

This event is available exclusively to WCA Members. If you are interested in attending this virtual event, please visit our event website here.
