All WCA corporate members have the same rights, whether large or small, whether from emerging economies or developed countries. We aim to provide a platform where even the smallest producers have a voice and to offer practical services to help members improve their business through knowledge exchange and sharing of best practices. This sentiment is echoed by Song Zhiping, President of WCA, who emphasises the WCA’s unique founding principle of equal representation.
The equal opportunity offered to all companies is reflected in the composition of the WCA board which has directors representing very large and very small as well as medium sized companies from Asia, Middle East, Africa and Europe. In addition, membership in the professional committees is open to all members and these committees have a key role in setting the agenda of the Association.
Your Key Benefits
WCA offers practical services to help members improve their business through knowledge exchange and sharing of best practices. This takes a number of forms:
- Members-only technical forums, usually held at a member’s plant, in which relevant managers from member companies can share experience on a specific topic, learn from experts and see new technology in action
- Activities that respond to members’ specific needs, such as visits to recently built plants to see the latest ideas in plant layout and design, or energy audits by an expert team to help define how to improve a particular plant’s energy efficiency.
- Opportunities to learn about new technologies and assess the related prospects at a very early stage in their development, helping members to stay a step ahead of the competition
As a worldwide organization, WCA facilitates cooperation at sector level. This gives members opportunities to work across sectors on development of industrial symbiosis models that consider sustainability, digitalisation and other trends which lead to new business opportunities for the building materials sector, benefiting both our members and society at large.

Cement and concrete are a fundamental part of today’s world and vital to the global construction sector. Cement is a hydraulic binder (it hardens when water is added) and mixed with sand and aggregates it forms concrete. Cement mixed with water, lime and sand forms mortar.
Affordable and versatile, strong and resilient, safe and durable - cement and concrete are crucial for the construction of infrastructure, including dams, bridges and tower blocks, and are the key to future sustainable development.
Cement and concrete have been used to build durable structures since Roman times. Thanks to the special binding properties of cement, concrete is a very resilient, durable material that can bear heavy loads and resist environmental extremes.
As a result of rapid urbanisation and economic development across the world, cement production has increased by thirty times since 1950, and in the present day, concrete comes second only to water as the world’s most used resource. China is the largest cement producer, with 53% of the total global output. India follows second with 8%, with this proportion likely to double in the next ten years.
Take a look at our Cement Facts and Media page to learn more about the different aspects of cement and concrete, including how it’s made, its multiplicity of applications, world cement statistics and sustainability innovations.
The World Cement Association, founded in 2016, is the largest independent organisation that works globally on behalf of the cement and clinker industry and its stakeholders, with offices in London and Beijing. We are a not for profit company incorporated under UK law, owned and controlled by our members.
The majority of our members are cement producers, ranging from the world’s largest companies, with capacities of 520 mt pa, to some of the smallest, with capacities of 0.5mt pa. We also represent companies across the wider value chain, including specialist engineering firms, equipment suppliers and technology providers.
Our members play an active role in the Association through their participation in the Board and four Professional Committees. WCA provides practical help to our members through sharing of best practices in Member Forums, where cement industry leaders in areas as diverse as plant design, green quarries, machine learning AI, vertically integrated business models and low carbon footprints can disseminate their knowledge and experience.
WCA supports a sustainable cement industry, encouraging technical development and innovation by its members to achieve full decarbonisation, in line with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and the 2015 Paris Agreement.
